The Four-Word Insult That Broke Halsey at the Height of Leyte Gulf.

On October 25, 1944, during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, a dispatch reached Admiral William "Bull" Halsey aboard USS New Jersey: "Where is, repeat, where is Task Force 34. The world wonders." Halsey read it as a public insult from Nimitz. He threw his cap to the deck and had to be steadied by his chief of staff. But the last four words were never part of the message. They were random security padding, meant to be stripped out before he ever saw them. This video tells the story of that accident: how it happened, who was responsible, and the hour Halsey spent brooding while escort carriers burned off Samar. We examine what those four words broke, what they didn't, and why the real failure at Leyte cost more than 1,000 lives. Sources and further reading: E.B.
