Why Japan Destroyed Its Own Best Pilots After Midway

Why did Japan destroy its own best pilots after Midway? Most people believe the battle itself wiped out Japan's elite aircrews. It didn't. Out of roughly 2,000 carrier-qualified aircrews, only about 110 were lost. The rest survived. But within twelve months, nearly all of them were gone — not because of what America did next, but because of three decisions Japan made. When the fleet returned to Hashirajima, the wounded were classified as "secret patients" and locked in isolation for over a year. Healthy survivors were scattered across the Pacific to fight at the edge of fuel range. And the training system that created them was never rebuilt. This is the story of how Japan silenced, burned through, and ultimately wasted the finest carrier pilots on earth — and why the straight line from Midway to kamikaze was drawn by Japan itself.
