John Towers Said Only Carriers Would Win the War. And They Did.

John Towers was the third naval aviator the United States ever trained, and for thirty years he argued that carriers, not battleships, would decide a war in the Pacific. He was right. Coral Sea, Midway, the Philippine Sea, Leyte Gulf. Every turning point was settled by carrier aircraft while the battle line watched from over the horizon. And the man who built American naval aviation almost with his own hands was kept ashore, passed over for combat command again and again, and finally handed the fast carriers one day before Japan surrendered. This is the story of how an officer can be that right and rewarded that little. It is also an honest one. Towers was not simply a victim of the battleship establishment's prejudice. He was abrasive, relentlessly ambitious, and he made personal enemies of Ernest King, Raymond Spruance, and the Secretary of the Navy himself. The injustice is real, but it is not clean, and this channel does not pretend otherwise. One note for the sticklers. Towers never actually spoke the exact words in the title. That line is a fair summary of his life's argument, not a verbatim quote. The famous "carrier supremacy defeated her" line belongs to Marc Mitscher. Recommended reading: Clark G.
