Turning a corner in the alleys of Minami-Ikebukuro, one can sense the passage of time slowly emerging from the depths of the town. The area in front of Homyoji Temple is filled with the voices of people preparing for the Segaki ceremony, and this temple, with its long history, still breathes life into the present, not the past. However, the history remaining in this place is not a single, unbroken piece. Homyoji Temple, whose founding dates back to 810, collapsed in the Great Kanto Earthquake, was rebuilt, and then lost again in air raids. Many of the temple buildings that stand before us now were erected after that loss. Only the stone monuments and Buddha statues remain, bearing the memory of the ruins, watching the passage of time in a corner of the temple grounds. From there, as we proceed to the Zoshigaya Kishimojindo, the time that should have flowed in the same place suddenly takes on a different form. Built around 1700, the hall withstood the earthquake, escaped the flames of the air raids, and has stood as a nationally important cultural property to this day. Homyoji Temple, burned and rebuilt, and Kishimojindo, which remained unburned. Standing before that contrast, I began to feel that age is not simply the passage of time, but rather evidence that the land has repeatedly crossed over to tomorrow, carrying what has been lost and protecting what remains. The sound of cicadas fills the narrow town streets, and the tracks of the Toden Arakawa Line cross right beside people's lives. Temples and halls do not stand isolated, bearing only the weight of history. They stand there, their time dissolving into the sounds of people, the winding roads, and the atmosphere of the rows of houses. What remained in my heart after finishing my walk was not the satisfaction of having seen ancient architecture. The lost trees and the trees that remain.
