Leaving Yotsuya Station, the hillside town was already filled with temple roofs. The tiles of the main hall rested in layers on the slope of Tofukuin Hill, and beyond the wall, tombstones bathed in the setting sun. For 400 years, Edo has gathered temples in this area, and Yotsuya has accumulated layers of prayer like geological strata. At the very top of this thickness are the stone steps with their vermilion railings of Suga Shrine. Since its opening in 1634 as the guardian shrine of Yotsuya, countless feet must have ascended and descended these steps. But now, the line of worshippers on the same steps is not limited to local residents. People from different countries and with different languages ​​are crossing the ocean, cameras in hand, to witness those dozens of steps where two separated people are miraculously reunited. Beneath the cherry blossoms just beginning to bloom, the newest and thinnest layer of prayer—the desire to meet someone—gently piles upon the 400-year-old stone. Crossing Gaien-Higashi Street, the shadow of the temple receded behind me, and in Shinanomachi, a large building uniting different faiths divided the sky. An old shrine and modern prayers coexist back to back, separated only by a single street.
