The Palermo Court of Appeal has reduced the first-instance sentences of four doctors and nurses charged with the death of Valeria Lembo, a young woman killed in 2011 by an overdose of a chemotherapy drug. The fifth defendant, nurse Elena D'Emma, ​​pleaded guilty to two years and six months (she had received four years in the first-instance sentence). The former Head of Oncology at the Sergio Palmeri Hospital received a four-year and six-month sentence for manslaughter; the sentence for her colleague Laura Di Noto, who faced the same charge, was reduced from seven years to four years and four months; four years and eight months (six and a half in the first-instance sentence) for resident Alberto Bongiovanni, charged with manslaughter and forgery; and two years and 10 months (four in the first-instance sentence) for registered nurse Clotilde Guarnaccia, who was charged with manslaughter. Her husband, Tiziano Fiordilino, her parents, and her aunt, Anna Maria D'Amico, joined the civil action, assisted by lawyers Marco Cammarata and Vincenzo Barreca. Valeria Lembo died on December 29, 2011. Three weeks earlier, on December 7, she had been administered 90 milligrams of vinblastine (gds) instead of nine milligrams, a chemotherapy drug used to treat Hodgkin's disease.
