In 1939, millions of people met the Cowardly Lion. But very few ever met the man inside the costume. This is a very special episode of Haunted by Beauty—and one of the most personal I've ever made. For this episode, I traveled to the grave of Bert Lahr—the legendary actor whose unforgettable performance in The Wizard of Oz created one of the most beloved characters in movie history. Like so many of us, I grew up loving the Cowardly Lion. But until I began researching this episode, I knew almost nothing about Bert himself. Behind the laughter was a remarkable life filled with extraordinary success, difficult personal struggles, lifelong stage fright and performance anxiety, and a role that would define him forever. From his childhood on New York City's Lower East Side to the grueling reality of wearing a nearly 90-pound lion costume under the blazing MGM studio lights, Bert's story is every bit as compelling as the character he brought to life. Somewhere during my research, something unexpected happened. Bert stopped feeling like a movie character and started feeling like someone I wished I'd known. By the time I arrived at his gravesite, this investigation had become far more emotional than I ever expected. I'd like to take you to meet him.
