ADF 019 Expanding Strokes When and Why

Hi, I’m Delores, and welcome to Affinity Designer: Weekly Fundamentals. This is lesson ADF-019, Expanding Strokes: When and Why. In this lesson, I explain what it actually means to expand a stroke in Affinity Designer and why this decision matters as your artwork moves toward completion. A stroke may look simple, but how it behaves affects resizing, exporting, and how your file is interpreted in other programs. I walk through what changes when you expand a stroke, the advantages of converting it to a curve, and the trade-offs you need to be aware of. This lesson also focuses on timing. Expanding a stroke is a commitment. Keeping strokes editable gives you flexibility while you’re still designing, especially when working on illustrations, pattern designs, or detailed linework. Knowing when to make that transition helps you avoid frustration and unexpected results later.
