Working Artist Studio – Smart Pattern Making: Textures, Florals & Time-Saving – July 2026

Working Artist Studio Sessions are monthly creative conversations hosted by Delores Naskrent for artists, illustrators, surface designers and creatives who want practical insight, encouragement and behind-the-scenes learning from working artists and industry professionals. These sessions are designed to help creatives learn from real experiences, ask questions, explore different creative paths and stay connected to a supportive artistic community. In this session, surface pattern designer Jasmine Goodwin shared her process for turning hand-painted watercolour and gouache artwork into finished repeating patterns using Affinity Designer. Jasmine shared insights on: • Creating a customized surface design studio in Affinity Designer 3 • Combining useful vector and pixel tools in one workspace • Saving workspace presets and organizing pattern templates • Creating seamless background textures with pixel brushes • Recording macros to reduce repetitive steps • Cleaning scanned watercolour artwork • Removing backgrounds while preserving painted highlights • Reducing white halos around scanned motifs • Building and testing a repeating floral pattern • Creating colour palettes from original artwork • Adding texture to pattern backgrounds and motifs • Exporting several pattern sizes using reusable presets • Applying repeating patterns to mockups • Recolouring traditional artwork to create new colourways • Working between Affinity Designer on desktop and iPad This replay includes practical discussion, artist experiences, audience questions, creative insights and behind-the-scenes conversations intended to support artists and creatives at all stages of their artistic growth.
