It was a mechanism—triggered by a single volcanic eruption, the name of which remains unknown to this day. In this film, we reconstruct the catastrophe that the Byzantine historian Procopius of Caesarea described live, and that glaciologists only discovered fourteen hundred years later—in the ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica.
