Its exploration is inextricably linked to the so-called heroic age of polar exploration—a time of great expeditions and great explorers like Robert Falcon Scott, Ernest Shackleton, and Roald Amundsen, who competed to reach the South Pole in the early 20th century. Their bases on Ross Island—huts from the Discovery, Nimrod, and Terra Nova expeditions—survive today as a testament to that era. Geographically, Antarctica is the world's fifth-largest continent, surrounded by the Southern Ocean, which separates it from South America, Africa, and Australia. Unlike the North Pole, which lies in the icy Arctic Ocean, the South Pole is located on mainland land, hidden beneath several kilometers of ice in East Antarctica. The continent is divided into two distinct halves by the high Transantarctic Mountains, and its coastline is defined by, among other things, the Ross Sea, the Weddell Sea, and the long, northernmost Antarctic Peninsula. 📖 WHAT IS THIS EPISODE ABOUT?
