The script is based on real scientific data: discoveries in Vindija Cave, genetic evidence of interbreeding between Neanderthals and sapiens (most people outside Africa have between one and four percent Neanderthal DNA), the anatomy of the hyoid bone and debates about Neanderthal speech abilities, traces of symbolic behavior—ocher, jewelry, processed pigments—as well as the real history of Arctic exploration and anthropological debates about the boundaries of the Homo species.
