The No One Can Film Mausoleum Moulay Abdallah Cherif Ouzzane Morocco.

This was one of the most intense moments I’ve filmed. I went to the Mausoleum of Moulay Abdallah Cherif in Ouezzane, Morocco — a place that’s closed to non-Muslims and very conservative. I was the only woman there, and honestly I didn’t feel completely at ease. But I felt I had to document this sacred place, because almost no one dares to film it. I couldn’t speak much to the men reciting Quran, out of respect for their concentration. I only asked one question: why is the mausoleum closed to non-Muslims when it’s just a tomb? The mosque for prayers is on the other side, but I didn’t get a clear answer. Later I went to the Zaouia next door and met the local chief. He explained discreetly that this is a place for spiritual retreat and Quranic learning. He even told me King Mohammed VI visited here. Filming this was difficult, but I believe in sharing places and stories with respect, even when they’re hard to access. Am I the only one who’s tried to capture this? Moulay Abdallah Cherif was the great-grandfather of Moulay Al-Rashid, founder of the Alaouite dynasty that still rules Morocco today. He died in 1626 and was buried here. Ouezzane became a holy city and major center for the Shadhiliyya Sufi brotherhood. The Zaouia of Ouezzane trained Quranic students and was a spiritual retreat for centuries. The whole city is built on a hill, surrounded by olive groves and the Rif Mountains.
