The Oklahoma Traveler & Nita Williams, Goose Feather Christmas Tree-maker, KOTV, Tulsa, Dec. 1, 1999
Nita Williams made Christmas trees from goose feathers, in the old-world style brought to this country by German settlers. Before there were Christmas tree farms and Christmas tree lots at grocery stores and trees made of plastic, Christmas in Germany meant cutting a tree from the forest. But when the Germans became concerned at the toll their traditions were having on Bavarian forests, someone came up with the idea of using goose feathers. In Park Hill, Oklahoma, Nita Williams continued that tradition. Shortly after this story was broadcast on KOTV on December 1, 1999, a large box arrived at my desk. Nita had made me a beautiful goose feather tree, and included enough of her Moravian stars to cover every branch. It still stands every Christmas-time on the landing of our staircase, reminding me of a beautiful old-country craft, and of Nita Williams' talents and kindness. The photojournalist of this story was Michael Woods.
