N3: SOUTH AFRICA'S R29 BILLION HIGHWAY...OUR MOST IMPORTANT ROAD!
To build an economy you first need to build a road. South Africa has a road network of 750 000km's, the tenth longest network in the world in fact. SANRAL our national roads agency currently managing about 21,403 kms, of which 84 percent are non-tolled and only 16 percent are tolled. Provinces manage about 47,348 km's whereas 51,682km's is managed by municipalities. With all that said this I am standing on the side of the crown jewel of South African roads. This is the most important road in South Africa, with a length of 578 km, it even spans 4 provinces. Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Free State and KwaZulu-Natal This is the N3 Freeway. 7000 freight and logistics truck operators move up and down the N3 Toll Route daily as it this road links South Africa’s landlocked provinces to the Port of Durban. At an average of R500 cost per ton, this road generates around R29BN + in freight & commercial value. Traffic volumes average between 8500 to 13500 vehicles daily and spikes during peak traffic periods can be above 2000 vehicles per hour along sections of the Route. This is more than a road, this road is the lifeblood of the south African economy. But with rail not performing well enough, a lot of goods are now transported by road and this causes truck congestion. What is your experience of using the N3? What could make the N3 a better driving experience?
