The European agri-food sector experienced a contraction in the first two months of the year, with exports down 5% and global demand slowing. Italian olive oil has also suffered, with exports down 24% compared to last year, particularly to the United States. The market for domestic extra virgin olive oil, free of charge for wholesale exports, is experiencing a downturn, with an average price of €6.40/kg. What's really happening behind these numbers? The downward trend is general, but regional dynamics are crucial. Puglia remains the national benchmark, along with Calabria, where the price has dropped to €5.80, in some cases to €5.30. In Spain, the situation is even more tense, with the price of extra virgin olive oil dropping to €4/kg, reaching €3.90 on June 3rd. The olive oil sector is undergoing a reorganization phase. While operators assess the market impact, they continue to carefully monitor the spread between national and international prices, as well as the losses accumulated so far.
