RASINI FISHER'S COOPERATIVE SOCIETY

In the wake of dwindling fish stock, and the hope for a better life fast evaporating for the fishermen of the remote island of Faza in Lamu County at the turn of the 19th Century, decisive actions had to be made not only to save lives but also protect the marine resources surrounding the island. One of the decisions was to form Rasini Fisher's Cooperative Society. Rasini has adopted Participatory Management as a key organizational management tool given its informality and setting where everybody is adequately involved. Rasini Fisher’s Cooperative Society is currently the largest coastal fishers’ cooperative in Kenya made up of 310 members. Members save Ksh. 5 per kilogram of fish landed every day.
