During the driving test, you're often so excited that it's difficult to even distinguish left from right. When the examiner gives directions, you'll have to concentrate hard to look in the right mirror, put on your turn signal, and turn in the right direction. But it could also happen that, approaching an intersection, the examiner doesn't say anything. What should you do? In the absence of directions, the examiner will assume that you will continue straight at the intersection. There are other options, however, that you should implement if the examiner remains silent: for example, following the main road at forks. Or obeying a mandatory sign indicating the only permitted direction. Now, let's get in the car and go through all three of these scenarios, and I'll show you the correct behavior to follow to avoid making a mistake and having to retake the driving test. We'll be taking our "mock test" in Pordenone, my hometown, but we'll also visit a few other towns in the province. Let's pretend we're taking a driving test: you're behind the wheel, the instructor is your accomplice, and the examiner—who, I remind you, isn't here to fail you but to give you your license—will be sitting in the back, and there'll be a bit of excitement to keep you company. As we approach an intersection, let's assume the examiner doesn't give us any directions. He'll assume we're going straight. Will we need to do anything? To go straight through intersections, very often you don't need to do ALMOST anything, but there are also special cases where we'll need to be a little more careful to do the right thing. During the test, we'll be driving on roads we've obviously already driven on. It's unlikely that unexpected events will arise that you haven't already addressed with your instructor, who will have already explained and given you the right instructions on what to do. But if you happen to pass a road you haven't used during your driving tests, you'll simply need to carefully check the vertical and horizontal signs to be sure you're doing the right thing.
