Thank you!! 🔵 OVERTAKING CYCLISTS – HOW TO PERFORM THE MOVE SAFELY Overtaking cyclists while driving a motor vehicle is a very delicate maneuver, which must combine the rules of the highway code with common sense. As defined by the Highway Code, the carriageway is that part of the road intended for the circulation of vehicles. A bicycle is, in all respects, a vehicle; Sure, it doesn't have an engine, but that doesn't make any difference; according to the Highway Code, it remains a real vehicle, which will therefore find itself speeding along the road alongside cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, and many others. Therefore, we will find ourselves with vehicles on the road with extremely different characteristics, such as size, mass, and speed at which they can travel. Finding a much slower vehicle in front of us could create dangerous situations, where the one who will be most at risk, in the event of an accident and therefore a collision, will obviously be the driver of the vehicle with the least protection, and a bicycle doesn't guarantee any kind of protection whatsoever. And it is for this reason that cyclists, along with motorcyclists and pedestrians, are classified as vulnerable road users, and therefore protected more by the relevant code. First of all, once we see the cyclist, we assess the general road and traffic situation and check the center line to determine whether the conditions are right to pass them safely. If it seems possible, we check that we have VISIBILITY to ensure that no vehicles are approaching from ahead that would take away our space to move lateral. We then check with the MIRRORS to ensure that no vehicles are approaching from behind that are about to overtake us. If everything is clear, we activate the LEFT INDICATOR to indicate our intention to move sideways to pass the cyclist, keeping it on only for the time strictly necessary to move sideways, and not keeping it on for the entire duration of the overtaking. We begin the maneuver maintaining an adequate SAFETY DISTANCE and move sideways, also maintaining an appropriate SAFETY DISTANCE of at least one and a half meters, and, if necessary, considering the cyclist's falling shape and potential swerving. After completely passing the cyclist, we check with the RIGHT MIRROR that we can reenter without risking hitting him, and we do so gradually. By doing these simple things, we'll be able to overtake a cyclist in complete safety—for them, for us... and, if we want, for our license, too. But now let's get in the car and actually overtake a cyclist. The Highway Code states that "cyclists must ride in single file whenever traffic conditions require it, and in any case, never more than two abreast; when riding outside built-up areas, they must always ride in single file, unless one of them is under ten years of age and is riding on the right of the other." In short, this means that only in certain circumstances, and only in built-up areas, cyclists may ride side by side; outside built-up areas, they may never ride side by side. However, this doesn't mean that, even if they do, the driver is authorized to overtake them with inappropriate maneuvers, putting their lives in danger. #overtakingcyclists #drivingtest #highwaycode
