A variable frequency drive is how you control the speed of a three-phase motor. It takes your fixed mains supply and rebuilds it into an adjustable frequency and voltage, so the motor can ramp up gently, run slow or fast on demand, and save real energy on pumps and fans. Wiring one is simpler than it looks once you separate the two halves: the power side and the control side. On the power side, your supply lands on the input terminals — L1, L2 and L3 (sometimes marked R, S, T) — through an input breaker or fuses. The drive's output terminals — U, V, W (or T1, T2, T3) — run out to the three-phase motor. The golden rule lives here: never put a contactor or switch on the output while the drive is running, and never feed mains into the output. Either mistake destroys the drive. Ground the drive and the motor at PE, and use shielded motor cable, because a VFD is electrically noisy. On the control side, digital inputs handle run, stop, forward and reverse; an analog input takes a speed reference from a potentiometer as 0-10V or 4-20mA; and relay outputs report run and fault. We cover two-wire versus three-wire control, the braking-resistor terminals, and setting the motor nameplate parameters, all at a level a beginner can follow. Full disclosure: CircuitDiagramMaker is our tool. It is genuinely good for schematic and control drawings you can share and hand off, and PNG export is free. For the motor-control logic itself, our sister PLC simulator is linked below. Every claim here you can test yourself in about ten seconds. Safety: this is three-phase mains and the DC bus stays charged after power-off — wait for it to discharge and leave the work to a qualified person.
