A Victron SmartShunt is the small battery monitor that finally tells you the truth about your battery — the real state of charge, the amps flowing right now, and how long you have left. This tutorial takes a finished SmartShunt wiring diagram apart, connection by connection, so every stud and every wire finally makes sense, and you can open the same diagram free, with no install and no signup. We start with the one rule that makes a shunt work: the shunt goes in the negative line, and nothing connects directly to the battery negative except the shunt. Because it measures current as the tiny voltage across itself, every amp in and out of the battery has to pass through it. Break that rule — bolt one load straight onto the battery negative — and that current is invisible, so your state of charge drifts wrong within a day. Then the two big studs. One is marked battery minus and bolts to the battery negative post, and only the battery negative post — a single fat cable, nothing else on it. The other, marked minus to system, is the common point where every other negative lands: the inverter, the charger, the solar controller, the DC-DC, and the chassis ground. The only path from any load back to the battery runs through the shunt, stud to stud, so every amp is measured. From there we cover the thin B+ sense wire — run to battery positive with its own inline fuse — that powers the shunt and lets it read the full pack voltage, the Bluetooth link to the VictronConnect app for state of charge and time remaining, and the four mistakes behind almost every wrong reading: a load on the battery negative, swapped studs, no fuse on the sense wire, and an undersized shunt. We also size the shunt to your peak system current — 500, 1000 or 2000 amps. Full disclosure, said plainly in the video: CircuitDiagramMaker is our tool. It is genuinely good for clean battery and solar wiring you can share, mark up, and hand off, and PNG export is free. The guest editor ships the do-it-yourself pack, which is what the live build uses. If your build has control logic — a battery protect, an automatic transfer, a low-voltage load shed — our sister PLC simulator is linked below. This is an honest, testable walkthrough of how to wire a Victron Smart Shunt, and you can check every claim yourself in about ten seconds. Safety: work on the battery positive with care, fuse the sense wire, and leave anything you are unsure of to a qualified person.
