Skardu Valley | A Journey to The Peaks at 30000 Feet | Travel Pakistan | Gilgit Baltistan

Skardu is a city in Pakistan-administered Gilgit-Baltistan, part of the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region. It functions as the capital of both Skardu District and the Baltistan Division. The city lies in the Skardu Valley at an average elevation of about 2,500 meters (8,202 feet) above sea level, where the Indus and Shigar rivers meet. Skardu serves as a key access point to the nearby Karakoram range’s eight-thousand-meter peaks. The Indus River flows through the area, forming a natural boundary between the Karakoram and the Ladakh Range. The name “Skardu” is thought to originate from a Balti term meaning “a lowland between two elevated places,” referring to Shigar city and the high-altitude Satpara Lake. The Skardu Valley lies about 180 kilometers from the main Karakoram Highway, and the connecting road is narrow and hazardous, marked by sharp turns and steep cliffs that require careful driving.
