Exploring Shigar Fort — The Royal Palace of Baltistan | Skardu, Pakistan

Nestled in the picturesque town of Shigar in Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan, Shigar Fort — also known as Fong Khar, meaning “The Palace on the Rock” — is a historic palace located about 30 kilometers from Skardu. The fort stands along the famous route leading toward the Baltoro Glacier and K2, the world’s second-highest mountain, making it an important cultural landmark in the heart of Baltistan. The history of Shigar Fort dates back centuries. In the 11th century, the Amacha rulers built an earlier fort called Khar-i-Dong after migrating from Ganish in Hunza. That structure was later destroyed during Mughal invasions in the region. The present-day fort was constructed in the 17th century by the 20th Raja of the Amacha Dynasty, who built it atop a massive rock and named it Fong Khar — “The Palace on the Rock.” In recent years, the fort was beautifully restored by the Aga Khan Cultural Service Pakistan in collaboration with the Aga Khan Historic Cities Programme. Following its restoration, Shigar Fort was transformed into a heritage museum and luxury hotel managed by Serena Hotels. The restoration project, completed between 1999 and 2004, earned the fort the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award in 2006 for excellence in cultural heritage conservation.
