The Akasawa Forest Railway is a preserved railway running through the Akasawa Natural Recreation Forest, one of the three most beautiful forests in Japan, located in Uematsu-cho, Kiso County, Nagano Prefecture. The Akasawa Forest Railway was the last of the forest railways active in Japan to be in service in Japan, the Kiso Forest Railway. The track width was 762 mm, which was narrower than the tracks of the JR railway, known as 'narrow gauge', and was the most suitable means of transport in the mountainous areas at the time. Eventually, the means of transporting timber shifted from railways to trucks. The Kiso Forest Railway also completed its last operation in 1975. The turning point was the felling of Ise Shrine timber in the Akasawa Park in 1985. The forest railway, which was active in transporting timber for the first time in many years, was broadcast nationwide and quickly gained a reputation. Two years later, the Akasawa Forest Railway, which runs through a 300-year-old natural cypress forest, first started operating during the summer holidays. The Akasawa Forest Railway operates within the park from spring to autumn during the opening period. As it was originally a museum facility, it does not run for long distances.
