Norfolk and Western 611: The Blue Ridge Special | Summer of Steam 2026 [4K]

The summer of 2026 for railroad history has been like no other. From historic coast to coast tours, side by side races, locomotives sporting schemes only one could dream of, this summer has really proven the hard work and dedication of the railroad world, in its mission to preserve and create history. When the Virginia Museum of Transportation announced it was bringing their crown jewel back to the Virginia Scenic Railway for more exciting excursions on the mainline, railfans were once again blessed with the opportunity to see the Norfolk and Western 611 under steam once again. Little did we all know, the VMT and partner modeling company, Sunset Models better known as 3rd Rail, were cooking up a surprise like no other. Just a few weeks before her departure from Roanoke, the 611 was continuously teased to be apart of more history, the first in the locomotives lifetime. On May 30th, 2026, the VMT and Sunset Models showed off their hard work, in presenting the 611 in a new and historical vinyl wrap, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United Stated of America. This new wrap being heavily inspired by the concept art drawn in the 1970’s, which was a proposal to steam the 611 up to haul to 200th anniversary “American Freedom Train.” 50 years later, and this dream in which many people had forgotten, had become a reality. In partner with the Virginia Scenic Railway and the Buckingham Branch Railroad, the 611 would have a months long visit to the Blue Ridge mountains, where she would pull many excursions for the public to partake in. On the very first weekend from June 12th to June 14th, we visit the Buckingham Branch for an amazing three days of excursions as the 611 struts her stuff once again in an amazing display of power, dedication and hard work. All for the public’s enjoyment and to teach younger generations about how our nation was formed off the backbone of such an extraordinary machine. Let’s follow the 611 as she traverses the grades of the former Chesapeake and Ohio Mountain Division to the nearby town of Afton, on the Blue Ridge Special and the Summer of Steam.
