Die Harzer Schmalspurbahnen - Eine Region und ihre Eisenbahnstrecke

The Harz is the northernmost mountain range in Germany. Since the end of the 19th century a narrow gauge railway makes the region accessible. This film combines shots from the Trans-Harz Railway, the Selke-Valley Railway and the Brocken Railway. Additionally, the South-Harz Railway, which is disused since 1963, is shown in a short excursus. The film shows i.a. the one hundred years old Mallet locomotive 99 5906 pulling a regular passenger train, a special trip of a passenger train with goods service pulled by the locomotive 99 234 including a lot of shunting action as well as various other regular and special trains. Other than steam engines, shots of diesel engines and railcars are also included in the film. As of late, diesel locomotives of the class 199.8, called the "Harz camel", are in service on the Brocken line to an increasing degree.
