What 3 Days on the Rubicon Does to a Group of Friends

When's the last time you took a vacation to do something hard on purpose? After more than eight years, I'm back on the Rubicon Trail, this time with four friends who've never seen it. Five Jeeps, three days, and one of the toughest 4x4 trails in America. We made it through the Gatekeeper, got told no at the Soup Bowl and the Little Sluice, bent up a fender, blew two tire beads, and found out it can take three jacks to change one tire on granite. We camped at Rubicon Springs with the whole place to ourselves, climbed Cadillac Hill to Observation Point, and wrapped it up in Georgetown, the little gold-rush town where the Jeepers Jamboree got its start in 1953. This trip was never really about the rocks. It was about clearing the calendar, bringing the right people, and finding out what we're made of. Thanks to Sim, Tony, Rich, and Melvin for a memory of a lifetime!
