The tall vegetation wasn't hiding places, it was ambush screens. He learned to read the shallow passages where water ran over the sand, to sense the presence of lurking crocodiles not as a threat, but as a variation on the menu. He saw bogged-down buffalo not as easy prey, but as distractions for the territory's guardians. His figure was an apparition. His black mane, with the dense back cord of his purebred lineage, contrasted starkly with the verdant vegetation.
