Before moving on to the wild specimens, the first battle begins where almost everyone thinks they understand something: inside the house. Domestic cats and dogs seem like a miniaturized version of this ancestral competition. The dog, more often than not, appears heavier, noisier, and more willing to attack. The cat, smaller, quieter, more calculating, almost always seems fragile in its presence. But it only takes a dog that's too big to bring its nose close to an irritated cat for the balance to shift in a second. The cat arches its body, locks its eyes, calculates the distance. But this enormous difference between dogs didn't arise from nature. It arose from us.
