La Bahía de Cádiz estrena nueva senda que une San Fernando y Chiclana sobre esteros y marismas

The Bay of Cádiz, a marine inlet declared a Natural Park in 1989, has a new trail. Almost seven kilometers of path connect San Fernando and Chiclana, traversing salt marshes and wetlands. It forms part of the EuroVelo program, a network of European routes that crosses the entire continent from north to south and east to west. The Bay of Cádiz is the largest tidal marine system in Spain and has the unique characteristic of having been shaped over the last 3,000 years by all the cultures that have inhabited the area, first by producing salt and later by developing salt production and aquaculture. The architecture firm of the Díaz-Recasens brothers won the public competition for the project. Paths have been repaired, sluice gates in the salt marshes have been restored, and four walkways have been installed, one of them 200 meters long over the Sancti Petri channel. Along the trail, there are several viewpoints marked by stakes, a traditional system for containing mud and which also serves as perches for birds. In addition to connecting the towns of Chiclana and San Fernando, the project's authors hope it will attract European hikers and cyclists. The path along the Bay of Cádiz is scheduled to open before the end of the year. This route will connect with other green spaces in the province of Cádiz, such as the Conil-Los Caños bike path and the Two Bays corridor between Puerto Real and Algeciras.
