Halogen Pedestrian Lights | South Woodham Ferrers Level Crossing, Essex

Date filmed: Monday the 2nd of September 2024 Videos filmed at: 15:03 | 15:13 Route: Crouch Valley Line South Woodham Ferrers (SOF) Station Crossing type: Automatic half Barrier Crossing Locally-monitored by traincrew (ABCL) Filming location: Hullbridge Road, South Woodham Ferrers (CM3 5NH) A level crossing on the Crouch Valley Line next to South Woodham Ferrers Station on a reasonably busy road in South Woodham Ferrers, Essex. The fairly busy station here sees trains heading between Wickford on the Southend Victoria Line and the end of the branch line at Southminster on the Dengie Peninsula, and has an unusual every-40-minute service each way. The Southminster end of this line is very remote. Whilst the road lights (wigwags) here are LED, this is quite a unique crossing as the pedestrian signals are STILL the halogen bulb-type variants even this far into 2024! Three of these are 'inverted' (a red flashing background with a silhouetted standing figure), and two of these 'inverted' ones appear to have had their meshing removed recent to filming so the unusual design is more visible than ever. This is the only crossing I've ever known of to have this 'inverted' design at it, and the uniqueness of the crossing makes up for the monotony of endless Class 720s on this mostly self-contained branch line. Both alarms are still rather loud, and the extra set of lights for a driveway flashes completely out of sync with the rest. These pedestrian lights are here as this is also quite a busy crossing for pedestrians, though it's not uncommon, unfortunately, to see people crossing a little too soon after the train has passed (take the cyclist in the first video as an especially bad example). Additional railings also separate the walkways from the main road, and you could be forgiven for being surprised to see a half-barrier crossing here at all.
