Ingatestone Level Crossing, Essex

Date filmed: Tuesday the 7th of May 2024 Videos filmed between 14:23 and 14:56 Route: Great Eastern Main Line Ingatestone (INT) Station Crossing type: Manually Controlled Barrier crossing (MCB) Filming location: Station Lane / Hall Lane, Ingatestone (CM4 0BW) A few trains seen at this level crossing on a very quiet road next to Ingatestone Railway Station in Ingatestone, Essex. This level crossing is controlled from the former signal box beside it, now retained as a 'gate' box with a crossing keeper controlling this level crossing, as well as nearby Church Lane level crossing via CCTV and responsible for numerous local user-worked and occupation crossings. This is quite a quiet road, and normally sees close to more trains than cars, although a reduced service was running on the day of filming due to industrial action. As this is an important arterial route from London to the East of England, hourly Colchester stopping services and Norwich expresses naturally had to be maintained, though thankfully this would be one of the very last days of industrial action before the dispute was resolved shortly afterward. A couple can be seen in this video, along-side an intermodal freight train bound for Birmingham. The strings of bells on gantries either side of the level crossing are designed to ring out if a vehicle at an unsafe height attempts to cross, providing an audible warning of the obvious dangers of the overhead line electrification.
