Cycling Germany Alps: Forno di Zoldo - Toblach 06 09 2020
Today I decided to change the route a bit. Some wet days are coming. Fortunately, it is dry when I get up. However, threatening clouds that blow over. I will leave as usual at 9 am. I first descend to forno and then immediately start with the most difficult climb of today. The cibiana is only 10 km but quite steep. I have cycled this climb before. Fortunately, the climb is reasonably sheltered because it is immediately warm again. The steepest part is in the middle part. At the end it flattens out and you see the steep peaks around you. At the top is also a museum in honor of mountaineer Raymond Messner. There you still have a few kilometers up the mountain, so I will skip that. The descent is equally steep but goes through many mountain villages. At the end of the descent I turn left to Cortina. Here is a beautiful cycle path along an old railway line. It rises gradually and is asphalted to cortina. Cortina is located at an altitude of 1200 meters. Many cyclists use the cycle path and hordes of rental bicycles. It is a popular route especially for descending. Just before Cortina it starts to rain, so hard that I have to take shelter. After fifteen minutes I keep the bike open. After Cortina the road is unpaved but still manageable. From time to time it drips but it is not too bad. I had expected worse and planned to camp near Cortina. It is still early so I can continue for a while. Stocks such as bananas and cola are exhausted and the shops are closed on Sunday. So I mainly cycle on cookies and bread from the previous day. After Cortina the climb continues up to 1500. Near the top another shower erupts and I can take shelter again. I leave the cycle path because in the descent it becomes a muddy mess. There is some traffic and with the wet road surface you have to be careful on the risk of skidding during the descent. The road is also very narrow. I pass the intersection with the 3 sentences, they are not there this year. Too bad weather and no good overnight accommodation nearby. I descend to toblach where I quickly find the campsite. It is a luxury campsite. I get a small seat for 20 euros. Unfortunately the restaurant is full so I quickly cook my pasta meal when the weather is dry.
