Canada's Waterfall Park…Wells Gray Provincial Park.
We welcome you to join us today as we explore Wells Gray Provincial Park. We are Scott and Steph, a couple of adventurers seeking out fun, unique and beautiful spots while camping in our converted Ford transit van, Stella. Fly Fishing- The Little Fort and Wells Gray Provincial Park area is a paradise for freshwater anglers. The regions clear mountain fed rivers and lakes- including the North Thompson River, Mahood Lake , and Murtle Lake are home to rainbow trout, bull trout and kokanee salmon. Wells Grays glacial waters flow through volcanic canyons and waterfalls creating pristine spawning grounds. With over 5,000 square km of protected wilderness, Wells Gray offers one of the most untouched freshwater fishing experiences. Since we are heading off grid for a few days into the Park we have stopped in the town of Clearwater which is just outside the park to stock up on food and supplies. Here you can find everything that you need to start your adventure off right. This park is also known as what is known as Canada's Waterfall Park and was officially established in 1939, thanks to the passion of early explorers and conservationists who wanted to protect Helmcken Falls — the park’s most iconic feature. Standing at 141 meters, or 463 feet, Helmcken falls is four times taller than Niagara Falls and remains one of Canada’s most impressive natural wonders. Hidden in the heart of the Cariboo Mountains, this park is over 5,400 square kilometers of rugged wilderness and more than 40 named waterfalls, it’s a paradise for adventurers, nature lovers, and photographers. There are no major roads cutting through the park — meaning once you’re in it, it’s just you and nature. Besides all the incredible waterfalls in the park it is also known as one of British Columbia’s most breathtaking wilderness areas. For visitors, Wells Gray offers an authentic wilderness experience. You can canoe for days across the waters of Clearwater Lake and Azure Lake, camp beneath the stars, or hike to hidden gems like Dawson Falls and Spahats Creek Falls. The story of Wells Gray begins millions of years ago with fire and ice. Volcanoes once rumbled through this landscape, leaving behind vast lava fields and canyons. Later, glaciers carved through the volcanic rock, shaping the dramatic cliffs and valleys we see today. Long before the park’s creation, this land was home to the Secwepemc (Shuswap) people, who have lived here for thousands of years. Their knowledge and traditions remain deeply tied to the rivers, forests, and mountains of Wells Gray. Baileys Chute in Wells Grey Provincial Park is a powerful section of the Clearwater River, where thousands of litres of water surge through a narrow canyon every second. In late summer, visitors can witness Chinook salmon leaping against the current as they attempt to reach their spawning grounds upstream. The chute is named after Jim Bailey, a park ranger who helped map and protect this area, making it one of the parks most dramatic natural spectacles. Clearwater Lake Campground lies at the north end of Wells Gray Provincial Park, where the Clearwater River begins its journey through ancient lava canyons. Surrounded by old growth Cedar and Hemlock trees this campsite offers direct access to kayaking, fishing and hiking trails such as the Osprey Falls Lookout loop. It also has a cafe with WIFI access. Well that wraps our time here in Wells Gray Provincial Park, but join us next time as we walk on a glacier that is as thick as the Eiffel tower is tall in Paris. So please stick around for more of our adventures
