Most people take the route from Port Alberni, which usually takes about an hour and a half depending on traffic and road conditions. What used to be a rough logging road has now been chip sealed. There’s also an alternate way to get there from Lake Cowichan through forestry roads, but that route is gravel and is currently in pretty rough condition. In the summer of 2025, the drive became even more challenging after the massive Mount Underwood wildfire forced the closure of the Road to Port Alberni for months due to damage to sections of the road leaving Bamfield temporarily cut off from its main access route. One of the most unique parts of Bamfield is the west side boardwalk — a long wooden pathway that connects homes, docks, businesses, and waterfront views along the harbour. Since there are very few roads on this side of town, the boardwalk has been an important way for residents to get around for generations. Walking here gives you a real look at Bamfield’s coastal lifestyle, with fishing boats in the water, float planes overhead, and views stretching across Barkley Sound. It’s not just a walkway — it’s part of what gives Bamfield its character. For this trip we were lucky to snag a spot at Pachena Bay Campground which is one of the nicests places to camp on Vancouver Island. Located right on the edge of the Pacific Ocean near Bamfield, this campground is well known for it's large, clean sites and the stunning sandy beach that it is located on.
