"Charukeshi — the 26th Melakarta whose swara patterns move between devotion and longing, sringara rasa woven with bhakti. Suresh Vaidyanathan presented Mrittika Vaibhavam, a percussion ensemble at Bekal Gokulam Goushala in Periya, Alakode, Kasargod, accompanied by Chandrajith Durairaj on Tabla and Percussion, Vishak Ramaprasad and Krishnaprasad Hebbar on Keyboard, Karaikal S Venkatasubramanian on Electric Violin, Roo Geddes on Violin, Keerthan Holla and Chaithanya Ashok on Vocal, Mithra Pradeesh on Veena, and Ramaprasad Hebbar on Drums. This is Charukeshi Ragam, explored through rhythm itself, through ghatam and konnakol, the percussive syllables that trace the architecture of this poignant scale. Charukeshi is meditative and melodious, the raga whose mood holds devotion and beauty within the same swara. The ensemble carried the raga forward through layered rhythm, each tala cycle a new unfolding of its character, the ghatam's resonance answering the tabla, the konnakol mapping swara patterns in spoken syllables, the keyboard and strings echoing melodic contours. Here at the Goushala, home to 225 native cows, the music became an offering through percussion, the pulse of rhythm felt by those seated in witness and by Goumata standing in the open courtyard, Krishna receiving the sound of the tala as prayer.
