"The deity invoked by name is also the deity of the instrument itself — Saraswati, goddess of learning, music, and speech, receives her own namaskara through the strings that belong to her. Sahana S V presented a veena recital at Bekal Gokulam Goushala in Periya, Alakode, Kasargod, accompanied by Palakkad KS Mahesh Kumar on Mridangam and R. Rohith Prasad Kottayam on Ghatam. The veena rested on the stage, the tanpura's drone settling into the late afternoon air, the open ground carrying the sound across to the silent assembly of Goumata and the presence of Krishna. She offered Saraswati namostute, composed by Puliyur Doraiswamy Iyer, set to raga Saraswati and Rupaka thala. The raga and the deity share the same name — the melodic structure itself becomes a devotional form, the swara moving as an act of worship directed toward the one who grants the power of all utterance. Rupaka thala moves in three beats, the rhythm gentle, the ghatam and mridangam punctuating the spaces the veena left open. The cows stood near, their gaze steady, the Goushala home to 225 native Indian cows across nine indigenous breeds. Gou Seva is offered here daily to Lord Krishna. The veena's resonance reached them first — sound as blessing, music as the simplest and oldest form of prayer. The strings held both the name of the goddess and her listening presence. Sahana S V's rendering moved without haste, each phrase complete, the melodic line unfolding with clarity and devotion in equal measure.
