The port city of Ventspils has a fascinating history and a charming appearance. Once called Windau, it was the main port of the Duchy of Courland. Ships were built here, and the Duke's navy was based here. From here, ships departed for the West Indian and African colonies. During the Russian Empire, the city became one of the main ports for exporting Russian grain to Europe. During Soviet Latvia, an oil terminal was built here, through which the Soviet Union shipped a significant portion of its oil to the West. Now, all of this is a thing of the past. The city has significantly lost its position as a port. This has also impacted its budget. Nevertheless, Ventspils is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Latvia. But is this really true?
