Could this be the beginning of Putin’s downfall? More and more Russians, including people within the ruling elite, are expressing dissatisfaction with his decisions. Ukraine’s successful strikes on Russian infrastructure are contributing to this growing discontent. Could a cornered Putin resort to unpredictable moves? “He is a hedonist, not a fanatic ready to die for an idea,” Sergei Erofeev, a sociologist at Rutgers University, said on World Talks. The expert nevertheless believes that Russia’s fall elections will go ahead despite the country’s mounting problems. “Putin’s system is based on what can be described as electoral authoritarianism,” he added. At the same time, Erofeev argues that Putin is losing the war and that the only arena in which he is succeeding is the information war. For that reason, he says, the Russian leader is unlikely to launch a conventional war against NATO, as he is fully aware that he is struggling to achieve his objectives in Ukraine.
