Ein neues Zeitalter der Angst?! - Theologische Perspektiven von Prof. Thorsten Dietz
Lecture 1 of the Symposium of the Marburg Institute for Religion and Psychotherapy Topic: Faith without Fear? Trust in God in a New Age of Anxiety The fear surrounding the coronavirus has pushed all other fears into the background. We truly live in a new age of anxiety. What role does faith play in this? How can trust in God offer comfort? The tension between promise and reality often leads to spiritual conflicts. And where religion becomes rigid, where power is exercised, justified fears arise. How can these be overcome? The conference examines faith and fear from theological, anthropological, and psychological perspectives. The polarization and populism of the present are often interpreted as signs of a new age of anxiety. In his lecture, Thorsten Dietz introduces the discussion about the significance of fears in social developments. At the same time, he recalls helpful insights from theology on how to distinguish between constructive and destructive ways of dealing with fear. The coronavirus pandemic has also impacted the format of the conference: After six symposia of the "Marburg Institute for Religion and Psychotherapy" held in the traditional in-person format, the presentations will be published online for the first time.
