Inge Templemann: Spiritueller Missbrauch – Angst & Trauma im frommen Kontext – Wege der Überwindung
Lecture 5 of the Symposium of the Marburg Institute for Religion and Psychotherapy Topic: Faith without Fear? Trust in God in a New Age of Anxiety The fear surrounding the coronavirus has pushed all other fears into the background. We truly live in a new age of anxiety. What role does faith play in this? How can trust in God offer comfort? The tension between promise and reality often leads to spiritual conflicts. And where religion becomes rigid, where power is exercised, justified fears arise. How can these be overcome? The conference examines faith and fear from theological, anthropological, and psychological perspectives. While faith can be experienced as an astonishing resource in coping with fear alongside other life challenges, the opposite is true in spiritually abusive environments. There, fear is induced and used as a driving force for various dependencies. Why people—whether born into certain systems or not—submit themselves to authoritarian, destructive structures in the long run is a fascinating question. Is it a yearning for authority or a tendency towards excessive patriarchal power that creates and maintains their dependence, or are there entirely different influences that prevent them from pursuing a healthy spiritual path? Inge Tempelmann's lecture will examine the various "faces" of spiritual abuse and their underlying causes, explore the factors that overtly or covertly influence people and alter their thinking and consciousness, identify the far-reaching consequences for those affected, and suggest ways to overcome them. The pandemic has also impacted the conference format: After six symposia of the Marburg Institute for Religion and Psychotherapy held in the traditional in-person format, the lectures will be published online for the first time. More information about the symposium can be found at: https://studium-religion-psychotherap... The online symposium is a free offering from the Marburg Institute for Religion and Psychotherapy.
