South Africa - Pearl Mnyakama

In South Africa, where many young people from under‑resourced communities have never experienced the ocean, the I am Water Foundation is reconnecting hearts and minds with the sea. Through snorkelling and ocean conservation workshops, youth learn mindfulness, breathing, yoga and a deep respect for marine life. Through these workshops, Pearl’s been shocked by the long-lasting impact of long-living plastics and plastic pollution, leading to toxic microplastics in our oceans, affecting the entire ecosystem and killing a whole range of species. After attending an I Am Water workshop, she learned snorkelling and was proud to do litter picking at the beach. We contributed to the SESLA (Sport for Education and Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa) programme in South Africa by supporting the local staff and young people using the Participatory Video and Most Significant Change methodology to document and articulate their stories of change.
