DRC - Gustavie's Story

Gustavie was the victim of inter-familial violence at the hands of his stepfather and had dropped out of school for financial reasons. Not having anywhere else to go other than her home, the presence of her stepfather loomed over the house. With the help of her mother, aunt and grandmother, Gustavie was encouraged to give the Malaika school a try. Here, she developed skills in sewing, started playing football, and learned both French and English. The most life-changing outcome was Gustavie’s change in mindset. Playing sports cleared her mind of painful thoughts and memories from her childhood, and gave her hope that the future could be peaceful and joyful. Malaika is part of a broader SESLA (Sports for Education and Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa) programme supporting young people to improve their educational and professional opportunities. This pan-African programme is designed and delivered by local organisations, centring the needs of the local community and making contextually accurate interventions. We contributed to the SESLA programme in DRC by supporting the local staff and young people using the Participatory Video and Most Significant Change methodology to document and articulate the success stories.
