Turkish F-4 Phantom IIs in Italy for a NATO Exercise: A day at Istrana Air Base for Poggio Dart 2025

This video is about a day I spent at Istrana Air Base, in the North of Italy, at the beginning of this month during the NATO's Exercise Poggio Dart 2025 (PODA25). Istrana is the headquarters of the Italian 51º Stormo and for the occasion they organized a day open to planespotters during which we were able to record some of their daily activities with the Eurofighter Typhoons but also to see the Turkish Phantoms up close. In fact Poggio Dart is a joint international exercise which saw numerous aircrafts involved over the course of two weeks between the end of November and the beginning of December in Italian skies. Italian F35s, Tornados, Typhoons and Harriers were joined by both American F16s (coming from Aviano Air Force Base) and three F-4 Phantoms from the Turkish Air Force (Türk Hava Kuvvetleri) which chose Istrana as their logistics base for this training. The day opened mid-morning with the departure of several Eurofighters from the 51° Stormo, including a rare two-seater version, for their daily training missions. Afterwards, we were transferred in groups to the area where the three Turkish Phantoms were parked for a static photo and video session, a great opportunity to properly see these iconic aircrafts. Their Phantoms are dubbed the F-4E 2020 Terminators after they were implemented with an update realized by Turkish Aerospace Industries, making these 60-year-old birds the most advanced F-4s ever built. While I was admiring the F-4s, the two-seater Typhoon returned and started making numerous touch-and-goes, to then land completely followed by the single-seater. The afternoon started with the departures of both two Eurofighters and two F-4s for the actual exercise. When the sun began to set there was a visit from a couple of F-35A Lightning IIs from the Italian 6º Stormo of Ghedi that performed shy (very shy) touch-and-goes. The day ended with the return of the Phantoms and Eurofighters framed by a beautiful and dramatic sunset, which only winter days can offer.
