BMW R1300 GSA Takes On China and Tibet! Today we ride from Sok → Nagqu, where the G317 meets the G109 — the highway we’ve been trying to avoid since entering the plateau. Another huge day crossing the Changtang Plateau, a region known as “the big empty land in the north.” The landscape changes again as we climb higher, meet locals on the roadside, and get caught in a very close yak encounter in the middle of the Tibetan highlands. This is the everyday reality of riding a motorcycle through Tibet — a side most travellers never see. Nagqu (Nagchu) sits deep on the plateau at over 4,500m, surrounded by open grasslands and long, wind-carved valleys. Riding here feels like being dropped into a different world.
