Scandal and provocation have become marketing strategies for some works of art. In this video, I review the origin and original meaning of provocation in art and explain why scandal is the most direct way to increase the value of a work or an artist. As examples, I analyze Marcel Duchamp's urinal, Damien Hirst's animals in formaldehyde tanks, and Maurizio Cattelan's banana.
