400 & 600 km Brevet: Schlafen oder durchfahren?

🚴‍♂️ Sleep or ride through? It’s one of the most common questions before a first 400 km or 600 km brevet — especially with an evening start. And often, the answer is less about sleep itself… and more about how you manage your energy over time. 👉 This video is aimed at riders preparing for their first longer distances in randonneuring. 🧠 A different way to think about it My approach may sound unusual: 👉 Start without planning a sleep stop. Not because sleep is wrong — but because the idea of it can quickly become a mental escape. When things get difficult — and they will — cold fatigue solitude physical stress …a thought can appear: 👉 “I could just lie down for a bit…” And once that thought settles in, it can slowly undermine your mental stability. 🎯 What this video is really about This is not just about sleeping or not sleeping. It’s about how to: recognize low points early reduce unnecessary stress stay mentally stable for as long as possible extend the phase where riding still feels controlled 👉 Because the key is not becoming stronger — but breaking down less. 🚴‍♂️ My personal experience So far, I’ve ridden my longer brevets without sleep stops: 400 km: morning start → finish during the night 600 km: evening start → through the night → finish at night But: 👉 This is not a rule — just one possible approach. 🌙 Why evening starts are different Especially on a 600 km brevet: you often start after a full day night riding begins almost immediately fatigue feels unfamiliar and harder to manage 👉 This is where the real challenge begins. 🧩 Why small details matter Some aspects may seem unrelated to sleep — but they aren’t. Everything that: cools your body down adds stress drains energy affects your mindset …pushes you closer to the point where you want to stop. ✨ The goal 👉 Reduce what drains you 👉 Stay stable as long as possible 👉 And experience the night, rather than just surviving it Because realistically: These distances don’t happen often — maybe a few times a year. 🎥 What this video focuses on practical experience from long-distance rides mental strategies rather than strict rules honest reflections on fatigue and decision-making 📊 Join the discussion Long-distance night riding is different for everyone. What is hardest for you during night riding? Do you plan sleep stops — or decide on the road? ⏱️ Chapters 00:00 🎣 Intro – Sleep or ride through? 00:45 🚴‍♂️ My experience (400 & 600 km without sleep) 02:00 🌅🌙 Morning start vs evening start 02:55 🧠 Mindset – thinking like a 24h ride 04:36 ❗ Tip 1: “Sleep is not an option (mentally)” 04:47 ⚙️ Tip 2: Preparation & comfort 05:15 ☕ Caffeine – helpful or risky? 06:26 🧥 Layering – staying warm at night 07:05 🧤 Thin gloves – underestimated detail 08:46 🧣 Neck tube – small but effective 09:08 🪑 Comfort & saddle care 10:20 😴 Starting well-rested 11:00 👥 Tip 3: Riding in a group 13:28 🌙 Tip 4: Night phase & fatigue 14:39 🧠 Mental strength & intuition 17:07 💤 Tip 5: When you hit a low point 18:44 🛠️ Tip 6: Worst-case scenarios 20:26 🎯 Conclusion – finding your own way Long-distance cycling is as much mental as physical. And often, the hardest decisions happen in the quiet hours of the night. Thanks for watching 🚴‍♂️ Guido
