He was a prolific composer — over 300 works — with a style shaped by Brahms, Schumann, and Mendelssohn. The Petit Album de Concert was published by Bosworth and Co. in London and has no single opus number. IMSLP describes it as presumably a gathering of pieces composed across Nölck's career, collected into one publication. What holds the set together is a consistent approach: each piece puts a musical character at the front, and the bowing demands follow from that rather than leading it. Across the six pieces, the collection covers bow distribution at two beats to one and three beats to one, lifted staccato up bow combined with two-note slurs, slurring into accents, sustained tone within longer slurs, and a light off-string heel stroke in the closing waltz. The two Andante movements both address tone and bow weight, approaching it from different angles, the D major one in particular is a good test of whether a student can manage three notes on the down bow while keeping an even sound throughout. The complete set runs to around ten minutes. This edition includes a full score and a separate cello part, typeset for clarity in the lesson and on the stand.
