A student of Cyrille Rose at the Paris Conservatoire, and former solo clarinet of the prestigious Garde Républicaine Band. While many clarinettists know him for the demanding 18 Études de Perfectionnement, Clair Matin (published in 1926) shows his lighter, more melodic side: a charming Idylle dedicated to Charles Arambourou as a souvenir amical. The piece unfolds in a graceful ABA form with a contrasting central Intermezzo, and it rewards beautiful tone, lyrical nuance, and delicate rubato more than sheer finger speed. Jeanjean performed in Monte Carlo as principal clarinet of the Casino Orchestra, and works like this were designed as stylish “café concert” repertoire—elegant, accessible, and instantly communicative.
