Today, we visited Ami-dong Tombstone Village, a site of the most desperate and fierce struggle for survival hidden behind the glamorous facade of the metropolis of Busan. Originally a massive Japanese cemetery and crematorium during the Japanese colonial period, this place became the final refuge for displaced people who had lost their homes and flocked in following the outbreak of the Korean War. In those days when it was difficult to acquire even a single stone or a piece of land, the refugees built makeshift shacks (hakkobang) for survival, using the retaining walls of Japanese graves as building sites and the scattered tombstones and stone altars as foundations and steps. A strange and heartbreaking cohabitation between the 'living' and the 'dead.' Looking at the Japanese tombstones still embedded in the walls of the alleys and the corners of the stairs, we have captured the story of that era—a time we must never forget—on video.
